PART 18 For one long second… Nobody moved. The technician checked the trace again. Then a third time. His expression never changed. “I’m certain.” Brooks stepped closer to the monitor…………..

“Show me.” The map zoomed in. The blinking signal wasn’t coming from another city. Not another building. Not even another street. It originated… On the fourth floor of St. Matthew Medical Center. Thomas Greene’s floor. Mariana felt the blood drain from her face. “He’s here.” Brooks grabbed his radio. “Lock down every entrance.” “No one leaves.” “I repeat…” “No one leaves this hospital.” Within seconds, agents spread through the building. Elevators stopped. Security doors locked. Doctors and nurses watched in confusion as federal officers filled the hallways. Thomas Greene slowly sat upright in his hospital bed. His expression told Brooks everything. “You already knew.” Thomas closed his eyes. “I hoped…” “…he wouldn’t come himself.” Mariana stepped closer. “Peter is here?” Thomas nodded.

“If the bracelet has been found…” “…he was always going to appear.” The search began. Room by room. Floor by floor. Every visitor was questioned. Every surveillance camera reviewed. Every employee badge checked. Thirty minutes passed. Nothing. Brooks frowned. “Impossible.” Linda folded her arms. “If Peter was here…” “…he’s gone.” One of the surveillance analysts suddenly called out. “Agent!” Brooks hurried over. “What?” The analyst replayed hallway footage. A hospital orderly pushed a wheelchair toward the emergency exit. An elderly patient sat beneath a blanket. The orderly never looked toward the cameras. Neither did the patient. The footage skipped for only three seconds. When the next camera activated…

The wheelchair was empty. The orderly had vanished. Brooks stared. “Enhance the orderly.” The face slowly sharpened. Mariana gasped. “No…” The orderly wasn’t wearing a disguise. He was Peter. Outside… A city bus quietly pulled away from the curb. Peter Lawson sat near the back wearing ordinary clothes. The hospital uniform had disappeared. He calmly removed an earpiece. Then looked out the window. He smiled softly. “They’re getting better.” The passenger beside him chuckled. “So are you.” Peter didn’t answer immediately. Instead… He watched the hospital disappear into the distance. “They’re finally asking the right questions.” Back inside the hospital… An evidence team searched Thomas Greene’s room one final time. A young agent noticed something unusual. One chess piece sat on the windowsill. A white bishop. Brooks picked it up carefully. Unlike the others… No note. No hidden compartment.

Only one tiny engraving beneath the base. E4 Linda frowned. “A chess move?” Brooks slowly shook his head. “Maybe.” Mariana suddenly looked toward Thomas. “My father taught me chess.” Everyone turned toward her. “He always said something strange.” “What?” “He said…” “…’Never memorize the pieces.'” “‘Memorize the board.'” Thomas smiled weakly. “He remembered.” Mariana frowned. “What?” Thomas pointed toward the bishop. “E4.” “Not a move.” “A location.” Three hours later… Federal investigators searched every property connected to Richard Santos. Nothing. Then… One young analyst noticed an old survey map. Richard’s childhood farm. Every field had been marked using coordinates. A. B. C. D. E. Across. Numbers down the side. Brooks looked at Mariana. “It was a grid.” She immediately understood. “E4…” She pointed to one square. “The old barn.” The barn had collapsed years earlier.

Only a stone foundation remained.

Mariana walked slowly through the tall grass.

“This place feels smaller.”

Thomas had insisted on coming despite his injuries.

He looked toward the eastern corner.

“There.”

Brooks ordered ground-penetrating radar.

Minutes later…

The technician looked up.

“There’s something beneath the concrete.”

Construction crews carefully removed the broken slab.

Nearly six feet below…

A steel hatch appeared.

Rust covered every hinge.

But the lock remained intact.

Mariana looked at the bracelet.

“It fits.”

She inserted the tiny silver bracelet into a hidden slot.

A soft metallic click echoed underground.

The hatch slowly opened.

Cold air drifted upward.

Linda aimed her flashlight downward.

Concrete stairs disappeared into darkness.

The underground room was astonishingly intact.

Dust covered everything.

Shelves lined every wall.

Filing cabinets.

Maps.

Tape recorders.

Typewriters.

Dozens of locked boxes.

Brooks looked around in disbelief.

“Richard built this.”

Thomas nodded.

“After he realized nobody above ground could be trusted.”

Mariana walked deeper into the room.

Photographs covered one wall.

Hundreds of them.

Gregory.

Edward.

Christopher.

Peter.

Politicians.

Corporate executives.

Judges.

Every face connected by red strings and handwritten notes.

Then…

At the very center…

One enormous photograph.

A family portrait.

The Caldwell family.

Edward.

His wife.

James.

Christopher.

And…

A little girl no older than eight.

Mariana frowned.

“Who is she?”

Thomas slowly approached.

His face turned pale.

“I thought…”

“…they destroyed every copy.”

Linda looked at him.

“Who is she?”

Thomas whispered,

“Emily.”

Mariana searched her memory.

“I’ve never heard that name.”

Thomas nodded.

“Very few people have.”

He stared at the photograph for several long seconds before speaking again.

“She wasn’t just another Caldwell.”

“She was Christopher’s twin sister.”

Silence filled the underground room.

Brooks frowned.

“A twin?”

Thomas nodded.

“She disappeared when they were children.”

Mariana looked back at the photograph.

“What happened to her?”

Thomas slowly closed his eyes.

“Nobody ever found her.”

Then he looked directly at Mariana.

“At least…”

“…that’s what everyone was told.”

Just then…

Brooks’ phone vibrated.

He answered immediately.

The color drained from his face.

“What?”

Linda stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Brooks lowered the phone.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Richard Santos…”

“…just surrendered himself.”

Mariana froze.

“What?”

“He walked into a federal field office…”

“…and demanded to confess.”

Thomas’s eyes widened in horror.

“No…”

Brooks looked confused.

“Why would that matter?”

Thomas slowly shook his head.

“Because Richard would never surrender…”

“…unless he believed it was the only way to save Mariana.”

The room fell silent.

Every instinct told Mariana the same thing.

Her father wasn’t giving himself up because he had lost.

He was buying time.

And somewhere…

Someone had forced him to make that choice.

PART 19 The underground bunker became eerily quiet. No one spoke after Agent Brooks delivered the news. Richard Santos had surrendered……………
