For one terrifying second… Nobody knew where anyone else was. Only hurried breathing filled the darkness. Then… Emergency lights flickered on. Deep crimson. The room looked as though it had been submerged beneath blood. Mariana instinctively reached for Susan. Their hands found each other. Neither let go. Brooks immediately pulled a flashlight from his jacket. Its beam swept across the room. Every exit… Gone. The doorway they had entered through had disappeared behind a seamless steel wall. Linda stared. “That’s impossible.” Thomas slowly shook his head. “No.” “It isn’t.” “I’ve seen this before.” The unfamiliar voice echoed again. Calm. Emotionless.
Almost artificial. “Welcome to Archive Zero.” The walls vibrated. Dust drifted from the ceiling. A massive circular symbol slowly illuminated beneath their feet. Mariana recognized it immediately. Not the lion. Not the oak. The compass. Only now… She could see twelve lines extending outward. Each ending in a different family crest. Then… A thirteenth line slowly appeared. Blank. Waiting. The mechanical voice continued. “Generation Twelve successfully completed.” “Preparing succession.” “Generation Thirteen initialization in progress.” Linda whispered, “It’s not talking to us…” Thomas answered quietly, “No.” “It’s talking about us.” Colorado Mountains Richard Santos heard the same voice through Benjamin’s old military radio. Both men looked toward one another. Benjamin slowly turned the volume higher. The transmission continued. “Primary heirs confirmed.” “Guardian candidates confirmed.” “Archive Zero secured.” Richard suddenly realized what was happening. “They’re trapping them.” Benjamin nodded. “They’ve activated the Protocol.” Richard looked toward the Founder.
“You planned this.” The Founder slowly shook his head. “No.” For the first time… His expression carried genuine fear. “I tried to stop this protocol thirty years ago.” Richard stared. “You?” The Founder nodded. “I created Project Legacy.” “I did not create Archive Zero.” Silence. “I’ve never been allowed inside.” Back beneath St. Gabriel Hospital… The old crib slowly rolled backward by itself. Hidden rails carried it into the floor. Beneath it… Another compartment slowly opened. Inside rested a crystal display case. Protected beneath thick glass. At its center… A leather-bound journal. Unlike Susan’s. Unlike Richard’s. Its cover carried only one word. ORIGIN Mariana carefully stepped closer. The display suddenly illuminated. A scanner passed across her face. Then her eyes. Then her palm. The voice returned. “Identity confirmed.” “Mariana Santos.” A pause. Then… “Secondary identity confirmed.” Mariana frowned. “Secondary?” The machine continued. “Mariana Caldwell.” Another pause. Then… Something no one expected. “Mariana Ashcroft.” Thomas staggered backward.
“No…”
Linda looked confused.
“Ashcroft?”
Thomas whispered,
“The extinct bloodline.”
Brooks looked at him.
“The one Dr. Cross said disappeared in 1987?”
Thomas nodded.
“It wasn’t extinguished.”
His eyes slowly turned toward Mariana.
“It survived.”
The glass protecting the journal quietly slid open.
No alarms.
No locks.
Only acceptance.
Mariana slowly lifted the heavy book.
Its leather felt warm.
As though someone had touched it only moments earlier.
She opened the first page.
Instead of handwriting…
A family tree unfolded.
Three names had been highlighted.
Mariana Santos
Benjamin Morgan
Isabella
The third name stopped there.
No surname.
No birth certificate.
No official identity.
Simply…
Isabella
Linda frowned.
“Why doesn’t she have a last name?”
Isabella quietly answered from behind them.
“Because they erased it.”
Everyone spun around.
Brooks instantly raised his weapon.
“You followed us.”
Isabella slowly raised both hands.
“I had no choice.”
She held up a small tracking implant removed from beneath her skin.
“They always know where I am.”
Before anyone could respond…
The journal suddenly turned its own pages.
Fast.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Stopping near the end.
A folded letter fell onto the floor.
Across the envelope…
Only six handwritten words.
Open together. Never separately.
Mariana looked at Benjamin.
Then Isabella.
The three of them stepped forward together.
Each placed one hand on the envelope.
The wax seal instantly cracked by itself.
Inside…
Only a single page.
Written in faded blue ink.
Not by Richard.
Not by Susan.
Not by Michael.
At the bottom…
Signed by someone simply identified as…
The First Guardian
“To the children who finally stand together…”
“If this letter has reached you…”
“…then our greatest failure has also become our greatest hope.”
“You were never experiments.”
“You were never heirs.”
“You were never replacements.”
“You were created for one purpose.”
Mariana swallowed.
Her heartbeat echoed inside her ears.
She continued reading.
“To end everything we began.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Brooks looked toward Thomas.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas slowly whispered,
“It means…”
“…Project Legacy was never supposed to survive.”
The next page unfolded by itself.
A detailed map appeared.
Not of the hospital.
Not of the United States.
Of the world.
Red circles marked twelve locations.
London.
Rome.
Tokyo.
Buenos Aires.
Cape Town.
Cairo.
Sydney.
Moscow.
Toronto.
Reykjavík.
Singapore.
And one final location…
Hidden beneath the mountains of Switzerland.
At the center of the map…
A handwritten sentence.
The Final Archive
Benjamin looked at Mariana.
“I know that mountain.”
Mariana frowned.
“You’ve been there?”
Benjamin slowly nodded.
“When I was sixteen.”
“I escaped.”
“You escaped from what?”
Benjamin’s face became pale.
He looked directly into Mariana’s eyes.
“I wasn’t raised by a family.”
“I was raised…”
“…inside the Final Archive.”
Every person in the room froze.
Benjamin continued.
“There are thousands of children there.”
Mariana whispered,
“What?”
“They’ve been preparing…”
“…for Generation Thirteen.”
At that exact moment…
Every monitor inside Archive Zero came alive once more.
A live satellite image filled the screens.
Snow-covered mountains.
A fortress carved directly into the side of a cliff.
Sirens echoed across the complex.
Massive steel gates slowly opened.
Thousands of men and women dressed in identical gray uniforms walked into formation.
Then…
A single figure stepped onto a stone balcony overlooking them all.
The Founder slowly lowered his head.
Richard Santos closed his eyes.
Thomas Greene whispered a prayer.
Because the person standing on the balcony…
Was someone every one of them believed had died before any of this had begun.
The giant screen zoomed closer.
The figure smiled.
Then spoke only four words that changed the future forever.
“Welcome home, children.”
And beneath the image…
A name appeared.
DR. AMELIA CROSS
