PART 9 — MARY’S CONFESSION Dad stared at the tiny memory card in his palm. For a moment, he looked afraid to close his fingers around it. As though something that small could still cut him. Harold stood a few feet away. Richard watched from beyond him. Vanessa had gone completely silent. Daniel was the first to speak. “We need to get that onto a computer.”…………

Dad looked at him. “Somewhere safe.” Richard laughed under his breath. Nobody looked at him. Dad slipped the card into his shirt pocket. “No.” Daniel frowned. “No?” “I’m not putting this into any computer connected to the internet.” Harold nodded slowly. “That’s smart.” Richard’s expression tightened. Dad looked around the driveway. “The fire department has a command trailer?” One of the firefighters nearby turned. “We do.” “Computer?” “Yes, but—” “Offline?” The firefighter hesitated. “Some of the equipment is.” Dad looked at Daniel. “Good enough.” Five minutes later, we were inside a temporary emergency command trailer parked two houses down. The firefighter who escorted us looked very confused. I couldn’t blame him. Dad. Me. Vanessa. Daniel Mercer. Harold Pike. Richard Bell, watched closely by two officers. And one tiny memory card that suddenly seemed more important than the burned house behind us. Dad refused to let anyone else touch it.

He inserted it himself. The computer recognized the card. One folder appeared. MARY_C Dad stared at it. His hand trembled over the mouse. I put mine over his. “You don’t have to do this alone.” He looked at me. Then clicked. Inside were fourteen files. Photographs. Scanned documents. Audio recordings. And one video. The video title was simple. IF EDWARD EVER SEES THIS Dad stopped breathing. Vanessa covered her mouth. I felt my throat tighten. “Play it.” Dad whispered. The screen went black. Then Mom appeared. Older than in the hospital photograph. Thinner. Tired. She was sitting in what looked like our old guest room. I knew the wallpaper immediately. The video had been recorded in Dad’s house. Mom adjusted the camera. Then she looked directly into it. For several seconds, she said nothing. Then: “Edward.” Dad’s face collapsed. It had been six years since he had heard her voice. He reached toward the screen without realizing it. Mom continued.

“If you are watching this, then I either finally found the courage to tell you everything…” She paused. “…or I ran out of time.” Dad covered his mouth. Nobody moved. Even Richard stopped looking smug. Mom took a breath. “I need you to understand something before I begin.” “I loved you.” “I loved our daughters.” “And nearly every terrible decision I made started because I thought I was protecting one of you.” Her eyes filled with tears. “That does not mean those decisions were right.” Dad whispered: “Mary…” The recording continued. “In 1993, I discovered Whitmore County Hospital was keeping money that belonged to patients.” “I complained.” “Nobody cared.” “So I started correcting the refunds myself.” “I told myself it wasn’t stealing because I wasn’t keeping anything.” “I told myself I was simply returning what belonged to people.” She looked down. “That was the first lie I told myself.” Harold closed his eyes. Mom continued. “Once you decide rules do not apply because your intentions are good, it becomes dangerously easy to cross the next line.” I looked toward Harold.

He didn’t move.

Mom said:

“I asked Harold for help.”

Dad looked at him.

Harold stared at the floor.

“He knew bank systems.”

“He helped me trace people.”

“He helped me move refunds.”

“I trusted him.”

Dad’s jaw tightened.

Mom continued.

“Then Thomas Vale found out.”

Richard shifted.

Mom looked directly into the camera.

“Thomas was clever.”

“But he was not the most dangerous man.”

Dad glanced toward Richard.

Mom said:

“Richard Bell was.”

Richard’s face went still.

Mom continued.

“Richard understood that Thomas had discovered something useful.”

“A system.”

“A weakness.”

“An invisible path for money.”

“He turned something I created to help people into something designed to exploit them.”

Mom’s voice hardened.

“I will live with that shame for the rest of my life.”

Dad shook his head slightly.

“No.”

But the video did not stop.

“Vanessa became involved through Thomas.”

Dad looked toward her.

Vanessa was crying silently.

Mom continued.

“At first, she did not understand everything.”

“Later, she did.”

“And by then, Richard had enough on all of us to make leaving dangerous.”

Dad’s expression darkened.

Mom leaned closer to the camera.

“He threatened Natalie.”

My chest tightened.

“He showed me photographs.”

“Her school.”

“Her job.”

“Her car.”

“I knew what he was capable of.”

Dad whispered:

“You should have told me.”

Mom could not hear him.

But somehow, the next thing she said felt like an answer.

“Edward, I know what you would have done.”

Dad stopped.

“You would have confronted him.”

“You would have tried to protect me.”

“You would have tried to protect the girls.”

“And Richard would have used your love against you.”

Dad turned away.

Mom continued.

“So I made the decision for you.”

“I am sorry.”

The trailer was completely silent.

Then Mom said:

“In 1998, I decided to destroy Richard’s network.”

Harold raised his head.

Richard’s face hardened.

Mom’s expression changed.

Not frightened.

Determined.

“I began keeping records.”

“Names.”

“Payments.”

“Accounts.”

“People inside law enforcement.”

“People inside banks.”

“People inside the hospital.”

“People who helped Richard move money.”

“People who helped make witnesses disappear.”

Daniel whispered:

“The ledger.”

Mom continued.

“I let Thomas believe I was trying to save Vanessa.”

“I let Richard believe I was afraid.”

“I was afraid.”

“But fear can be useful if someone mistakes it for weakness.”

Dad stared at the screen.

I had never heard Mom speak like this.

Mom continued.

“I needed Richard to believe Thomas still controlled access to the system.”

“So I used Thomas as bait.”

Harold looked toward Richard.

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Mom said:

“I knew Thomas would eventually betray Richard.”

“He was greedy.”

“He wanted more money.”

“He wanted his own operation.”

“So I made sure Thomas discovered information that looked valuable enough to steal.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What information?”

Mom answered almost immediately.

“A list of accounts that did not exist.”

Harold whispered:

“Fake accounts.”

Mom continued.

“I created them.”

“Richard thought they contained millions.”

“They contained nothing.”

“But I knew he would move his people to protect them.”

“And once he did…”

She paused.

“…I could see who they were.”

Dad’s eyes widened.

“She mapped the network.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

Mom continued.

“Every movement told me something.”

“Who called whom.”

“Who paid whom.”

“Which police officers changed schedules.”

“Which bank employees accessed records.”

“Which hospital administrators destroyed files.”

Richard looked genuinely angry now.

Mom continued.

“For a short time, it worked.”

“Then Richard realized someone was watching him.”

“He suspected Thomas.”

“Thomas suspected me.”

“And everything became unstable.”

Mom looked down.

“There was a night when I thought I could end it.”

“The night Thomas was supposed to die.”

Dad stared at the screen.

Mom continued.

“I told Richard that Thomas had taken the real account list.”

“He believed me.”

“I told Thomas that Richard planned to kill him.”

“He believed me too.”

“I arranged for them to meet.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Mom…”

Dad turned toward her.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Mom continued.

“My plan was simple.”

“I wanted Richard and Thomas in the same place.”

“I wanted Daniel Mercer nearby.”

“I wanted enough evidence to force Richard into the open.”

Daniel went pale.

“You used me.”

Mom continued.

“But the plan failed.”

Her voice cracked.

“Thomas arrived early.”

“Richard arrived with another man.”

“Daniel never received the correct address.”

Daniel stared at Harold.

Harold looked away.

Dad noticed.

“What?”

Harold said nothing.

On screen, Mom continued.

“Someone changed the message I sent Daniel.”

Dad’s face went cold.

He looked at Harold.

Harold whispered:

“Edward…”

Dad said:

“You?”

Harold shook his head.

The video continued.

“I still do not know who changed it.”

“But after that night, I understood something.”

“Richard’s network was larger than I thought.”

Mom looked straight into the camera.

“And someone I trusted was still helping him.”

Harold stopped breathing.

Dad stared at him.

Mom continued.

“I suspected Harold.”

Dad’s face fell.

Harold closed his eyes.

“But I never proved it.”

Harold looked like the words had hit him physically.

Mom continued.

“I suspected Daniel.”

Daniel flinched.

“I suspected police.”

“I suspected hospital administrators.”

“I suspected everyone.”

“That was exactly what Richard wanted.”

Mom’s voice softened.

“He wanted us afraid of one another.”

“He wanted us isolated.”

“He wanted us confused.”

“He wanted every person holding a piece of the truth to believe someone else was the enemy.”

Dad looked at Richard.

Richard smiled faintly.

Mom continued.

“So I stopped trying to expose the network directly.”

“I divided the evidence.”

Daniel whispered:

“Of course.”

Dad looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed toward the screen.

“She made sure nobody could destroy everything at once.”

Mom continued.

“The ledger contains names.”

“The blue coat contains this recording.”

“Paul Harker has the financial evidence.”

“Harold has something he does not know he has.”

Everyone turned toward Harold.

He stared at the screen.

“What?”

Dad said.

Harold shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Mom continued.

“And Edward…”

She paused.

Dad leaned closer.

“…you have the final piece.”

Dad’s face went blank.

“What?”

Mom smiled sadly.

“You have had it for years.”

Dad whispered:

“What is she talking about?”

Mom continued.

“Do you remember our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary?”

Dad stopped.

His expression changed.

I looked at him.

“What happened?”

He whispered:

“She gave me a watch.”

Mom smiled on screen.

“The watch was ugly.”

Dad laughed through tears.

“It was.”

Mom continued.

“You pretended to love it.”

“I knew you hated it.”

A tiny smile appeared on Dad’s face.

Mom said:

“I asked you to promise never to throw it away.”

Dad’s eyes widened.

“Oh my God.”

He stood.

I grabbed his arm.

“What?”

“The watch.”

“Where is it?”

Dad looked toward the burned house.

“My bedroom.”

My stomach dropped.

Mom continued.

“Inside the back plate is a number.”

“A sequence.”

“You will know what it means when you have everything else.”

Dad stared at the screen.

Then Mom’s expression changed again.

More serious.

“There is one person I need to warn you about.”

Everyone went still.

Mom looked directly into the camera.

“If Richard is still alive when you see this, do not negotiate with him.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“He will lie.”

“He will offer deals.”

“He will tell you he is protecting someone.”

“He is protecting only himself.”

Dad stared at Richard.

Mom continued.

“But Richard is not the person I fear most.”

That changed the air in the trailer.

Richard looked toward the screen.

Mom’s eyes filled with tears.

“The person I fear most is someone Edward trusts completely.”

Dad turned slowly toward Harold.

Harold whispered:

“No.”

Mom continued.

“I do not know whether Harold betrayed me.”

Harold exhaled.

“I do not know whether Daniel did.”

Daniel went still.

“I do not know whether someone in law enforcement did.”

Morgan looked down.

“But I know this.”

“One person knew every location.”

“Every meeting.”

“Every movement.”

“Every place I hid evidence.”

Dad looked confused.

“So who?”

Mom’s voice became quieter.

“Someone inside our family.”

Vanessa stopped crying.

I felt cold.

Mom continued.

“I spent years believing it was Vanessa.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was wrong.”

Her head snapped up.

“What?”

Dad stared at the screen.

Mom said:

“Vanessa made terrible choices.”

“She lied.”

“She stole.”

“She helped Thomas.”

“But she did not know enough to betray every location.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Mom…”

Mom continued.

“Someone else did.”

Dad’s voice cracked.

“Who?”

Mom looked into the camera.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely frightened.

“I discovered the answer shortly before I became ill.”

Dad went completely still.

Mom continued.

“I was afraid to write the name.”

“I was afraid to say it.”

“So I encoded it.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Encoded where?”

Mom answered.

“In the anniversary watch.”

Dad grabbed the side of the table.

Mom continued.

“If you find the watch, do not open it around anyone you do not trust.”

Harold whispered:

“That’s all of us.”

Mom’s expression softened.

“Edward.”

“If you are watching this, I am sorry.”

“I know how much this will hurt.”

“But the truth has already taken too much from us.”

“Do not let it take Natalie too.”

My throat tightened.

Mom smiled.

“I love you.”

Then she looked slightly away from the camera.

For one second, I thought the video was ending.

But Mom turned back.

“One more thing.”

Dad leaned closer.

“If Vanessa ever tells Natalie you are dead while you are still alive…”

Everyone froze.

Dad stared at the screen.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

Mom continued.

“…do not assume Vanessa invented the idea.”

Dad turned slowly toward her.

“What?”

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I did.”

“I swear.”

Mom’s voice continued.

“Vanessa has always been easily manipulated when she believes she is about to lose something.”

Dad stared.

“Someone knows that.”

“Someone will use it.”

“And if that day ever comes…”

Mom paused.

“…then the network is active again.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time.

Then Dad whispered:

“She knew.”

Harold said nothing.

Dad turned toward Vanessa.

“Who told you I was dead?”

She stared at him.

“I told you.”

“I made it up.”

“No.”

Dad stepped closer.

“Think.”

Vanessa looked confused.

“I did.”

“I called Natalie.”

“You called her.”

Dad nodded.

“But where did the idea come from?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

She stopped breathing.

Dad saw it.

“So someone did say something.”

Vanessa slowly sat down.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

She covered her mouth.

“Grant.”

Dad froze.

“What about Grant?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Two days before I called you…”

Her voice shook.

“Grant told me Harold had said Dad’s health was worse than everyone knew.”

Harold’s face changed.

“I never said that.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“He said you did.”

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“What else?”

Vanessa continued.

“Grant said…”

She swallowed.

“He said if Dad died before the property transfer was complete, we needed to move fast.”

Richard looked away.

Dad noticed.

“You knew.”

Richard said nothing.

Dad turned toward him.

“Did you tell Grant?”

Richard remained silent.

Harold stepped forward.

“Answer him.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“You’re all still asking the wrong question.”

Dad’s face hardened.

“What question should we ask?”

Richard looked directly at me.

“Where is Grant?”

Nobody spoke.

I felt cold.

Vanessa whispered:

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Months ago.”

“After the investigation?”

“Yes.”

“Where did he go?”

“He said Florida.”

Richard smiled.

“He didn’t.”

Dad stared.

“Where is he?”

Richard looked toward the burned house.

“Closer.”

Vanessa stood.

“What does that mean?”

Richard’s smile widened slightly.

“It means Grant was never just your greedy husband.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Dad said:

“What was he?”

Richard answered:

“My insurance.”

The trailer went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Richard shrugged.

“Grant watched Vanessa.”

“He reported what she found.”

“He told me when Edward changed documents.”

“He told me when Harold got involved.”

“He told me when Natalie came home.”

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa stared at him.

“He worked for you?”

Richard smiled.

“For years.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You’re lying.”

“Ask yourself why he always encouraged you to fight your father.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Why he kept telling you Natalie wanted everything.”

“No.”

“Why he pushed you toward the property.”

“No.”

“Why he told you Edward was dying.”

Vanessa’s face broke.

Dad looked devastated.

Richard continued.

“Grant’s job was simple.”

“Keep you angry.”

“Keep you greedy.”

“Keep you distracted.”

“And most importantly…”

He looked at Dad.

“…keep you searching.”

Dad whispered:

“For the ledger.”

“Yes.”

Harold looked toward the door.

“Where is Grant now?”

Richard said nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody moved.

Dad whispered:

“Answer.”

I did.

“Hello?”

At first, silence.

Then breathing.

Male.

Familiar.

And then:

“Natalie.”

My stomach dropped.

Grant.

Vanessa went completely still.

“Grant?”

He laughed softly.

“Good.”

“You’re all together.”

Dad stepped closer.

“Where are you?”

Grant ignored him.

“Natalie, did you watch Mary’s video?”

Nobody spoke.

Grant laughed again.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Dad said:

“What do you want?”

Grant’s voice changed.

“The watch.”

Dad looked toward the burned house.

Grant continued.

“You have ten minutes.”

“For what?”

“To bring me Mary’s anniversary watch.”

Vanessa screamed:

“You used me!”

Grant went quiet.

Then:

“Vanessa.”

Her voice broke.

“You knew everything.”

“Not everything.”

“You worked for Richard.”

Grant laughed.

“Richard thinks I worked for him.”

Richard’s face changed.

Nobody missed it.

Dad slowly looked toward him.

Grant continued.

“That’s the problem with men like Richard.”

“They always think they’re the smartest person in the room.”

Richard stepped toward the phone.

“Grant.”

Grant laughed.

“There he is.”

Richard’s voice hardened.

“What are you doing?”

“Finishing what Mary started.”

Everyone froze.

Dad stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?”

Grant’s voice became calm.

“Find the watch.”

“Bring it to the old Whitmore hospital annex.”

“Come alone.”

Dad shook his head.

“No.”

Grant continued.

“If you don’t…”

A sound came through the phone.

Someone crying.

My stomach dropped.

Dad whispered:

“Who is that?”

Grant said:

“Say hello.”

A weak voice came through.

“Edward…”

Harold’s face went pale.

“Paul.”

Paul Harker.

Alive.

Grant continued.

“You wanted answers.”

“Now you get to decide how much they’re worth.”

The line went dead.

Dad stared at the phone.

Then at the burned house.

Then at us.

And finally at Richard.

“You knew Grant was still here.”

Richard said nothing.

Dad stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“I suspected.”

Dad grabbed his shirt.

“WHERE IS THE ANNEX?”

Daniel pulled Dad back.

“I know where it is.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s face was grim.

“It closed twenty-two years ago.”

Harold whispered:

“Perfect place.”

“For what?”

I asked.

Harold looked at Mom’s frozen image on the computer screen.

Then at the ledger.

Then at Dad.

“For the place where all of this began.”

Dad looked toward the burned house.

Somewhere inside, if the fire hadn’t destroyed it, was Mom’s ugly anniversary watch.

And inside that watch was a code.

A code identifying the person Mom believed had betrayed everyone.

A person inside our family.

Grant had Paul.

Richard was hiding something.

Harold had lied for forty years.

Vanessa had been manipulated for decades.

And Mom had left us one final warning.

Do not open the watch around anyone you do not trust.

I looked around the trailer.

At every face.

And realized the problem immediately.

I didn’t know if I trusted a single person in that room.

TO BE CONTINUED — PART 10

PART 10 — THE WATCH The fire department refused to let Dad go back inside the house. For good reason. The roof above the rear hallway had partially collapsed. Water was still running down the stairs. Smoke hung in the air. And somewhere inside that damaged house was a small anniversary watch Dad had almost thrown away twenty-five years earlier……….
