PART 25 No one reached for the letter. No one dared. The name at the bottom had frozen every person in the archive…………..

Michael Caldwell. The man everyone believed had drowned more than forty years ago. The man who had supposedly vanished before Project Legacy truly began. The man Richard had just spoken to on the satellite phone. Mariana slowly looked toward Thomas Greene. “You said he disappeared.” Thomas nodded. “He did.” “But apparently…” “…someone made sure he stayed hidden.” Brooks carefully unfolded the brittle paper. The handwriting was elegant. Every sentence perfectly straight. Every word deliberate. Michael Caldwell had expected this letter to survive decades. He had written it accordingly. “If you are reading this…” “…then Harrison ignored my warning.” “Richard…” “I pray you are the one holding this letter.” Richard’s name echoed through the silent archive. Susan covered her mouth. “He knew Richard?”

Thomas answered softly. “They were friends.” “Before they became enemies.” Brooks continued reading. “You will believe the greatest danger is the inheritance.” “It never was.” “Money can be replaced.” “Power can be stolen.” “Even names can be changed.” “Blood cannot.” Linda frowned. “What does that mean?” Thomas whispered, “It means this was always about bloodlines.” Another page. “The children were never selected because of wealth.” “They were selected because of genetics.” Silence. Brooks looked up. “Genetics?” Susan slowly shook her head. “No…” Michael’s letter continued. “Project Legacy was created after something was discovered inside our family.” “A trait.” “One that could not be allowed to disappear.”

Mariana stared at the page. “What trait?” The next paragraph had been deliberately torn away. Someone had removed it decades earlier. Only the final sentence remained. “Find Genesis before they do.” Washington, D.C. Deep beneath the National Archives… The woman in white gloves placed the GENESIS binder into a secure briefcase. Another official entered. “Transportation is ready.” She nodded. “Where are we taking it?” “The Founder requested a personal meeting.” For the first time… The woman looked uneasy. “He never requests meetings.” The official quietly answered, “Apparently…” “…Mariana is moving faster than expected.” Colorado. Richard Santos and the elderly man sat across from one another. Neither touched the coffee growing cold between them. Finally… Richard broke the silence. “Tell me your real name.” The old man smiled faintly. “You already know it.” Richard shook his head. “I know the name everyone used.” “I don’t know who you really are.” The old man looked out the cabin window. Snow continued falling. “My name…” “…is Benjamin Morgan.” Richard’s eyes widened. “Morgan…” “The second child.” Benjamin nodded. “I was the baby born seven minutes after Mariana.” Richard slowly stood.

“No…”

“You can’t be.”

Benjamin reached into an old wooden chest.

He removed a faded photograph.

Two infants.

Lying side by side.

One wearing a bracelet marked M.

The other…

B.

Richard recognized the hospital blanket immediately.

It was authentic.

“This was taken before Harrison switched the records.”

Benjamin nodded.

“My mother escaped with me.”

“You escaped with Mariana.”

“We thought we’d never see each other again.”

Back at the hospital archives…

Linda suddenly found another envelope hidden beneath the box.

Smaller.

Unmarked.

Inside…

Only a cassette tape.

Brooks looked at the faded label.

Written by hand:

Play Only Together

Mariana frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas looked pale.

“It means…”

“…both heirs.”

An old cassette player was eventually located in the archive office.

Brooks carefully inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then…

A man’s voice emerged.

Richard’s voice.

But much younger.

“If you’re hearing this…”

“…then Michael’s plan failed.”

The recording paused briefly.

“I hope both of you are alive.”

Mariana felt tears forming again.

Both of you.

Richard had known.

All along.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know your names.”

“I don’t know where life has taken either of you.”

“But I know one thing.”

“If you’re listening together…”

“…then you’ve already broken the Founder.”

Brooks frowned.

“Broken?”

Richard answered through the decades.

“Project Legacy only works…”

“…if the heirs remain separated.”

Every person in the room exchanged stunned looks.

Susan whispered,

“That’s why.”

Mariana looked at her.

“Why what?”

“They kept you apart.”

Richard’s recorded voice continued.

“They will tell you one must inherit.”

“They will tell you one must disappear.”

“They’re lying.”

“There was never supposed to be one heir.”

“There were always two.”

Silence.

The tape hissed softly.

Then Richard spoke one final time.

“If you ever meet…”

“…trust each other before anyone else.”

“Not me.”

“Not Susan.”

“Not Thomas.”

“Not even Peter.”

“Because one day…”

“…someone will convince you that one of you must die.”

The tape clicked.

Ended.

No one spoke.

At that exact moment…

Benjamin Morgan looked toward the cabin window.

His expression changed.

Richard immediately noticed.

“What is it?”

Benjamin whispered,

“They found us.”

Outside…

Black SUVs slowly emerged from the snow-covered trees.

One after another.

Headlights illuminating the isolated cabin.

Richard counted quickly.

One.

Three.

Five.

Eight.

Twelve vehicles.

Far too many for a simple arrest.

Benjamin quietly opened an old cabinet.

Inside…

Lay two identical pistols.

He handed one to Richard.

“I hoped we’d never need these.”

Richard accepted it.

“Who are they?”

Benjamin looked directly into his eyes.

“They don’t work for the Founder.”

Richard frowned.

“Then who?”

Benjamin answered with visible fear.

“The people…”

“…who created him.”

At that same instant…

Brooks’ secure phone rang.

Unknown encrypted number.

He answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a calm elderly woman’s voice said only six words:

“Tell Mariana her grandmother is waiting.”

The call disconnected.

Susan slowly collapsed into a chair.

Her face had turned completely white.

Mariana rushed toward her.

“Mom?”

Susan looked up with terror in her eyes.

“No…”

Mariana held her shoulders.

“What is it?”

Susan whispered the name she had spent thirty-four years trying to forget.

“Evelyn Caldwell…”

“My mother.”

“But…”

“…she died before I escaped.”

Thomas Greene slowly closed his eyes.

Then quietly said the words none of them wanted to hear.

“No, Susan.”

“She simply allowed you to believe she had.”

PART 26 The name echoed through the archive. Evelyn Caldwell. No one spoke. Mariana looked from her mother………
