PART 26 The name echoed through the archive. Evelyn Caldwell. No one spoke. Mariana looked from her mother………

To Thomas Greene… Then back again. “My grandmother…” “…is alive?” Susan’s lips trembled. “She can’t be.” “I buried her.” Thomas slowly shook his head. “No.” “You buried another empty coffin.” Susan covered her face. “My entire life…” “…was built on lies.” Thomas answered quietly, “So was mine.” For thirty-four years… Susan had believed her mother sacrificed herself to help her escape. She remembered the explosion. The burning estate. The funeral. The tears. The closed casket. Every memory suddenly became suspect. Every certainty… Gone. Colorado Mountains The black SUVs formed a circle around Benjamin Morgan’s cabin. Their engines stopped simultaneously. No doors opened. No voices. Just silence. Richard Santos checked the magazine inside the pistol. Seven rounds. Benjamin calmly loaded his own weapon.

“They’re waiting.” Richard frowned. “For what?” Benjamin looked toward the tree line. “For permission.” One minute passed. Then another. Finally… The rear door of the center SUV opened. A woman stepped into the snow. She appeared to be in her late seventies. Tall. Elegant. Silver hair tied neatly behind her head. She wore a long black wool coat despite the freezing wind. No bodyguards walked beside her. She didn’t need them. Every armed man surrounding the cabin instinctively stepped back as she approached. Benjamin whispered only one word. “Evelyn.” Richard felt every muscle tighten. “So she’s real.” Benjamin nodded. “I wish she weren’t.” Evelyn stopped twenty feet from the porch. She smiled warmly. Almost kindly. “Richard.” Her voice was gentle. Exactly the opposite of what Richard expected. “You’ve aged well.” Richard didn’t lower his pistol. “You should be dead.” Evelyn smiled.

“So should you.” Back in Maine… Brooks ordered every available federal database searched for Evelyn Caldwell. Nothing. No birth certificate. No passport. No death certificate. No tax records. No fingerprints. Linda stared at the screen. “It’s like she never existed.” Thomas quietly replied, “That was intentional.” Another secure file suddenly decrypted itself. No password. No authorization. Just one blinking notification. Incoming Transmission Brooks hesitated. Then opened it. A video began playing. The recording had clearly been made only minutes earlier. Snow. Pine trees. Benjamin’s cabin. Mariana gasped. “That’s live.” The camera slowly zoomed toward the porch. Evelyn Caldwell looked directly into the lens. Then… She smiled.

Not at the cameraman. At Mariana. “Hello, my granddaughter.” Every person in the room froze. Evelyn continued speaking. “I’ve waited a very long time for this conversation.” Mariana whispered, “She knows we’re watching.” “Of course she does,” Thomas replied. Evelyn folded her hands calmly. “Richard has undoubtedly filled your head with stories.” “Some true.” “Many false.” Richard interrupted angrily. “Don’t listen to her.” Evelyn ignored him. Instead… She looked into the camera again. “I imagine you’re wondering why I disappeared.” Mariana couldn’t look away. Evelyn smiled softly. “Because someone had to remain inside.” Thomas suddenly inhaled sharply. “No…” Brooks looked toward him. “What?” Thomas looked terrified. “She never escaped Project Legacy.” “She became Project Legacy.” Silence filled the archive.

Susan slowly shook her head.

“No…”

Thomas whispered,

“I finally understand.”

Colorado

Richard stepped forward.

“You murdered hundreds.”

Evelyn answered calmly.

“No.”

“I prevented thousands.”

Benjamin laughed bitterly.

“You always justified everything.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“And you’re still alive because of those decisions.”

Benjamin’s expression darkened.

“My mother died because of your decisions.”

For the first time…

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

“Rebecca chose her own fate.”

Benjamin shouted,

“She chose freedom.”

Evelyn quietly answered,

“She chose chaos.”

Inside the archive…

Mariana noticed something strange.

Evelyn wasn’t speaking like a criminal.

She genuinely believed every word.

Every sacrifice.

Every death.

Every betrayal.

She believed she had saved people.

Not destroyed them.

Suddenly…

The video froze.

Static flooded the screen.

Linda quickly checked the signal.

“We’re being overridden.”

The image returned.

But now…

The camera had changed angles.

Someone else was filming.

A second person stepped into view behind Evelyn.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a navy overcoat.

Richard stared in disbelief.

“No…”

Benjamin’s hands began shaking.

“It can’t be.”

The man slowly removed his gloves.

Then smiled.

“Richard.”

“You still haven’t figured it out.”

Mariana leaned closer to the screen.

She had never seen him before.

Yet something about his face seemed strangely familiar.

Thomas whispered,

“Oh God…”

Brooks turned.

“You know him?”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I hoped I’d never see him again.”

“Who is he?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“The Founder.”

The man laughed softly.

“People always expect monsters.”

“They’re disappointed when they find ordinary men.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Mariana.”

Her heart nearly stopped.

“I know you’ve been searching for me.”

He smiled almost warmly.

“But you’ve been asking the wrong question.”

“You’ve asked…”

“‘Who is the Founder?'”

He slowly shook his head.

“That isn’t the question.”

Mariana felt a chill run through her body.

He continued.

“The real question is…”

“…why did I choose you?”

Richard suddenly raised his pistol.

“You’ll never touch her.”

The Founder smiled.

“I already did.”

Silence.

Richard froze.

“What?”

The Founder looked directly into the camera again.

“I met Mariana…”

“…twenty-six years ago.”

Mariana’s breathing stopped.

“No…”

“I remember the little girl who loved feeding ducks in the city park.”

A forgotten memory flashed through her mind.

She was eight years old.

A kind older gentleman had bought her a bag of birdseed after she dropped her coins into a fountain.

He had smiled.

Told her to always be kind.

Then vanished.

Mariana whispered,

“It was you…”

The Founder nodded.

“Yes.”

“I wanted to see whether you had inherited it.”

Thomas stared at the screen.

“Inherited what?”

The Founder smiled one last time.

Then answered with a sentence that turned every assumption upside down.

“Not the Caldwell bloodline…”

“…my bloodline.”

The transmission ended.

The archive fell into absolute silence.

Mariana slowly lowered herself into a chair.

Only one thought echoed through her mind.

If the Founder was telling the truth…

Then Richard Santos…

Might never have been her biological father at all.

PART 27 No one in the archive moved. No one even seemed capable of breathing. The Founder’s final words echoed endlessly through Mariana’s mind………
