PART 53
The following month, a massive crisis threatened my new role as Vice President at the Austin Tech Hub.
Our primary international shipping partner suddenly declared bankruptcy, leaving three major client contracts in jeopardy.
The board of directors was in a panic, demanding immediate solutions.
I spent three consecutive days in the war room, barely sleeping, reviewing contingency plans.
David noticed my exhaustion and the deep stress lines forming around my eyes.
Instead of telling me to relax or offering empty platitudes, he took action.
He spent two days leveraging his extensive network in the construction and logistics industry.
On Thursday evening, he walked into my home office and placed a neatly bound folder on my desk.
“What is this?” I asked, rubbing my tired eyes.
“An alternative supply chain proposal,” he said, pulling up a chair.
“I reached out to a mid-sized freight company in Houston that I worked with on the downtown project.”
“They have the capacity to handle your volume, and they are looking to expand into the tech sector.”
“I already had them draft a preliminary agreement with a ten percent discount for the first six months.”
I opened the folder, scanning the detailed, professionally formatted document.
It was brilliant.
It was exactly the lifeline I needed.
“David, this is incredible,” I said, looking up at him in awe.
“How did you do all this?”
“I paid attention to your stress,” he replied simply.
“I know I can’t do your job for you, but I can use my skills to support you in doing it.”
I stood up and walked around the desk, pulling him into a fierce hug.
“You are my greatest asset,” I whispered into his ear.
“And I am just trying to be the partner you deserve,” he replied, holding me tightly.

PART 54
The true test of Sarah and Ryan’s transformation came in late autumn.
Their teenage son, Leo, was caught skipping school and vandalizing a neighbor’s fence.
Sarah called me in a state of absolute panic, her voice echoing with a familiar, toxic rage.
“I am going to ground him for a year!” she yelled into the phone.
“I am going to take away his phone, his computer, and his friends!”
“Sarah, breathe,” I said calmly, using the same steady tone I had learned to use with Maya.
“Tell me exactly what happened before you react.”
Sarah took a shuddering breath on the other end of the line.
“He said he was angry because Ryan and I have been so strict lately.”
“He said we don’t care about him, just like his grandmother never cared about us.”
The mention of Victoria sent a chill down my spine.
“Sarah,” I said gently.
“Reacting with extreme punishment is exactly what your mother would do.”
“It will only push him further away and validate his belief that you don’t care.”
There was a long, heavy silence on the line.
“You’re right,” Sarah finally whispered, her voice breaking.
“I almost became her.”
“You didn’t,” I assured her.
“You called me.”
“You stopped yourself.”
“Go talk to him, Sarah.”
“Ask him why he is hurting, instead of just punishing the symptom.”
The next day, Sarah called me back, sounding exhausted but peaceful.
“We talked for three hours,” she said.
“He is seeing a counselor, and we are having weekly family meetings.”
“Thank you, Chloe.”
“You saved us from becoming my mother.”

PART 55 Just as we thought the storm had passed, Victoria launched a desperate, final ambush. She filed a frivolous legal motion in family court, claiming that David’s past gambling addiction and recent fostering of a child made him an “unfit guardian” of his own life.
