Mariana stared at the newborn footprint card resting beneath the spotlight. INFANT: MARIANA SANTOS PROJECT STATUS: SUCCESSFUL GENERATION TWELVE HAS BEGUN She slowly reached toward it. Her fingertips barely brushed the edge… When every monitor in the hidden room came to life. One after another. Dozens. Hundreds. Each displaying the same message. WELCOME, MARIANA. Brooks immediately raised his pistol. “Who’s there?” No answer. Instead… A calm female voice echoed through hidden speakers. “If you have reached this room…” “…then Richard succeeded.” Thomas frowned. “I know that voice.” Linda looked at him. “You do?”
Thomas nodded slowly. “It isn’t the Founder.” “It isn’t Evelyn.” “It’s…” He stopped speaking. His eyes widened. “No…” The recording continued. “My name…” “…is Dr. Amelia Cross.” Mariana had never heard the name. Thomas had. His knees nearly gave way. Brooks caught him before he fell. “You okay?” Thomas whispered, “She died.” Linda looked confused. “When?” “Thirty-two years ago.” The lights dimmed. A large projector illuminated the far wall. A woman appeared on the screen. Early forties. White lab coat. Kind eyes. She smiled gently. “If you’re watching this…” “…then I’m already gone.” She looked directly into the camera. “And if Richard kept his promise…” “…Mariana is standing in front of me.” Mariana’s heart skipped. The woman smiled. “You have your mother’s eyes.” Richard Santos. Susan Caldwell. Thomas Greene. Peter Lawson. Michael Caldwell. Photographs of each appeared beside Dr. Cross. They were younger.
Much younger. Standing together. Not as enemies. As friends. Mariana stared in disbelief. “They all worked together?” Thomas nodded. “Before everything fell apart.” Dr. Cross continued. “You’ve been told this story began with Project Legacy.” She slowly shook her head. “It didn’t.” “The project…” “…was only the consequence.” A map appeared behind her. Ancient. Yellowed. Covered with handwritten notes. “This began…” “…one hundred and seventy-three years earlier.” The year appeared. 1853 Brooks frowned. “What?” Dr. Cross smiled sadly. “The Caldwell family didn’t create Generation Twelve.” “They inherited it.” Old photographs appeared. Sepia portraits. Victorian clothing. Handwritten journals. Marriage certificates. Military records. Every generation carried one identical symbol. The lion wrapped around the oak tree. Thomas whispered, “The Guardians.” Dr. Cross nodded, almost as if she could hear him. “Yes.” “The Guardians of Truth.” “They were never a secret society.” “They were families.” “Twelve bloodlines.” “One promise.” Mariana looked closer.
Twelve family names slowly appeared on the screen.
Caldwell.
Santos.
Morgan.
Greene.
Lawson.
Cross.
Six names she recognized.
Six she had never heard before.
Then…
One family name was crossed out in deep red ink.
ASHCROFT
Beneath it…
One handwritten sentence.
Bloodline Extinct – 1987
Linda whispered,
“What happened to them?”
Dr. Cross answered moments later.
“They refused to obey.”
The room fell silent.
Colorado Mountains
The Founder calmly watched the snowfall.
Richard still aimed his pistol.
Benjamin stood beside him.
Neither man dared fire.
The Founder looked almost disappointed.
“I always wondered…”
“…whether Richard would tell Mariana the truth himself.”
Richard answered coldly,
“I was trying to give her a normal life.”
The Founder smiled.
“And how did that work?”
Richard said nothing.
The Founder slowly removed his gloves.
For the first time…
Mariana could clearly see his hands on the archived transmission.
His right hand trembled.
Benjamin noticed.
“So.”
“You’re dying.”
The Founder laughed quietly.
“Finally.”
Richard frowned.
“What?”
The Founder looked toward the mountains.
“My doctors estimate…”
“…perhaps six months.”
Silence.
Benjamin whispered,
“So this was never about stopping us.”
The Founder nodded.
“No.”
“It was about replacing me.”
Back inside the hidden archive…
Dr. Cross continued her recording.
“If you’ve reached this point…”
“…then the Founder has already contacted Mariana.”
Brooks looked at the screen.
“She predicted everything.”
Thomas whispered,
“Because she built the contingency.”
Mariana frowned.
“What contingency?”
Dr. Cross looked directly into the camera.
“You.”
“No.”
Mariana immediately shook her head.
“I’m not replacing anyone.”
Dr. Cross smiled sadly.
“I knew you’d say that.”
“You’ve said no…”
“…every generation.”
Mariana froze.
Every generation?
The projector changed again.
Portrait after portrait filled the wall.
Women.
Men.
Children.
Across nearly two centuries.
Each photograph carried the same handwritten title.
Guardian
Then…
At the very end…
One empty frame.
No photograph.
Only a printed name.
Generation Twelve
Guardian: Pending
Linda whispered,
“They expect you.”
Suddenly…
Every computer monitor in the room began flashing red.
SECURITY BREACH
SECURITY BREACH
SECURITY BREACH
Brooks reached for his radio.
Nothing.
Only static.
Thomas looked toward the heavy steel entrance.
“They found us.”
A thunderous explosion echoed somewhere above the archive.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Another explosion followed.
Closer.
The lights flickered violently.
Emergency sirens began screaming.
Linda checked the security cameras.
Her face turned pale.
“Oh my God…”
Brooks rushed over.
“What?”
The camera overlooking the hospital loading dock showed dozens of armored vehicles surrounding the building.
Not police.
Not FBI.
Not military.
No insignia.
Only identical silver armbands displaying the lion and oak crest.
Mariana whispered,
“The Guardians?”
Thomas slowly shook his head.
“No.”
His voice trembled.
“They’re the ones who hunt the Guardians.”
A final explosion shattered the archive entrance.
The massive steel door bent inward.
Smoke poured into the room.
Hidden within the smoke…
Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed.
One.
Two.
Three.
A silhouette emerged.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed entirely in black.
A silver mask covered the stranger’s face.
The figure stopped beneath the emergency lights.
Then slowly removed the mask.
Mariana’s entire body went numb.
Because the face staring back at her…
Was her own.
Not similar.
Not a distant resemblance.
Identical.
The woman smiled faintly.
Then spoke the six words that turned Mariana’s world upside down once again.
“Hello, sister… I’ve been waiting.”
