Part 20 “GET THAT BOOK OUT OF THE CABIN!” Daniel Harper and Adrian Blackwood shouted the warning at exactly the same moment. Instinct took over. I didn’t ask questions. I moved. Within a heartbeat, I grabbed the leather journal and sprinted toward the open doorway…………

General Reed immediately understood. “Everybody clear the structure!” Operators scattered in every direction. Nathan Cross shoved a heavy wooden table toward the entrance to slow anyone attempting to rush inside. I burst through the doorway just as another electronic tone echoed from the journal. Beep. Beep. Beep. Faster now. Not an explosive countdown. Something else. Something alive. I reached the middle of the clearing and carefully placed the journal on the damp grass before backing away. Everyone watched. Weapons remained lowered. Nobody breathed. The blinking light suddenly turned green. Then… Silence. Nothing exploded. No fire. No smoke. Only the sound of wind moving through the pine trees. One operator whispered, “False alarm?” Daniel slowly walked outside.

“No.” He looked at the journal with a mixture of admiration and regret. “She finally woke up.” I frowned. “Who?” Instead of answering, Daniel carefully opened the back cover. A section of leather folded away that none of us had noticed before. Hidden beneath it was an impossibly thin electronic device. No larger than a credit card. Yet decades ahead of its time. Nathan Cross stared in disbelief. “I thought every prototype was destroyed.” “So did I,” Daniel replied quietly. General Reed knelt beside the device. “It’s transmitting.” “To where?” Daniel looked toward the mountains. “Not where.” “To whom.” … Hundreds of miles away… Inside a secure archive buried beneath an abandoned observatory… A dormant server awakened for the first time in thirty-four years. Dust fell from old metal racks. Ancient cooling fans slowly began turning.

Monitors that had remained black since the early 1990s suddenly glowed blue. One line of text appeared. IDENTITY VERIFIED. Another followed. WELCOME BACK, ELEANOR MERCER. Seconds later… Another message replaced it. TRANSFER OF CUSTODIAN AUTHORITY IN PROGRESS… … Back in Montana… Every satellite phone carried by Reed’s team vibrated simultaneously. One after another. Operators looked down in confusion. None of them had received a call. Instead… Every screen displayed the same message. NEW CUSTODIAN IDENTIFIED. Then… My name. CLAIRE MERCER. I looked at Daniel. “What does this mean?” He smiled for the first time since I had met him. “It means your grandmother never intended anyone to inherit the archive.” “Not even her own children.” “She designed it to choose.” “Choose?” “The system evaluates.” “It waits.” “It watches.” “And when it believes the right person finally exists…” “…it transfers everything.” Blackwood took a slow step forward.

His calm expression had vanished.

“Impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You spent thirty years searching for files.”

“Eleanor built a successor.”

Blackwood stared at me.

“No…”

His voice was barely audible.

“It chose her.”

Daniel nodded.

“It always was going to.”

General Reed looked completely bewildered.

“Are you telling me…”

“…the archive made its own decision?”

“No.”

Daniel answered softly.

“Eleanor made it decades ago.”

“She simply removed herself from the equation.”

Suddenly…

The device emitted another tone.

A soft female voice echoed from its tiny speaker.

Not artificial.

Recorded.

Old.

Gentle.

“If you’re hearing this…”

“…then my plan worked.”

Every person froze.

Even Adrian Blackwood looked stunned.

Daniel slowly lowered his head.

“Eleanor…”

The recording continued.

“My name is Eleanor Mercer.”

“If this message has activated…”

“…I am almost certainly gone.”

“But the people standing around you…”

“…are probably arguing.”

A faint smile crossed Daniel’s face.

“Still predicting us…”

The recording continued.

“Nathan…”

Cross closed his eyes.

“…if you’re still alive…”

“…stop blaming yourself.”

He visibly flinched.

“Marcus…”

General Reed instinctively looked around before realizing she meant his grandfather.

“If your family is listening…”

“…remember that guilt can become another form of pride.”

Then…

A brief pause.

Finally…

“Claire.”

Every heartbeat in my chest seemed to stop.

“If you’re hearing my voice…”

“…then you are the woman I hoped you would become.”

Tears formed before I even realized it.

“I’ve watched your life from farther away than you will ever know.”

“I could not protect you openly.”

“So I protected your future instead.”

“You are about to learn many things.”

“Some will make you proud.”

“Some will make you angry.”

“And one…”

“…will break your heart.”

The valley had become completely silent.

Even the helicopters no longer mattered.

Only Eleanor’s voice.

“There is one truth no one standing beside you fully understands.”

“You believe Sentinel was created to protect exceptional families.”

“That was only our second mission.”

I slowly looked toward Daniel.

His expression changed.

He hadn’t known.

Blackwood hadn’t known either.

Neither had Cross.

The recording continued.

“Our first mission…”

“…was to hide someone.”

A chill spread across the entire valley.

Someone.

Not something.

Someone.

General Reed whispered,

“Who?”

Almost as if Eleanor had heard him across time…

Her answer came immediately.

“The first child.”

Daniel’s face went completely white.

“No…”

The recording continued.

“The child whose abilities frightened every government that discovered them.”

“The child who disappeared before anyone could decide whether to imprison…”

“…study…”

“…or weaponize them.”

Blackwood’s breathing became uneven.

Cross slowly backed away.

Daniel whispered under his breath,

“I thought that was only a rumor…”

Eleanor’s voice remained calm.

“That child lived.”

“And that child had descendants.”

I felt my pulse pounding in my ears.

The next sentence changed everything.

“Claire…”

“…your family was never chosen to guard the Legacy Register.”

“It was chosen…”

“…because you are descended from the first child.”

No one spoke.

No one even moved.

The mountains themselves seemed to fall silent.

The helicopters outside hovered motionless.

Adrian Blackwood stared at me as though he were seeing history itself standing before him.

Then Eleanor spoke one final sentence before the recording ended.

“And if they have found you…”

“…then they already know who your brother really is.”

The recording stopped.

The tiny device powered itself down.

A cold wind swept across the valley.

I slowly turned toward General Reed.

Then toward Daniel.

Then toward Nathan Cross.

Finally…

Toward the distant mountains where Luke was hundreds of miles away…

Completely unaware that his life had just become the center of a secret that had been buried for nearly a century.

And somewhere beyond those mountains…

A pair of unseen eyes watched a live satellite image of Luke Mercer walking out of his office.

A calm voice echoed through a dark command center.

“Forget Claire.”

“The brother is the priority now.”

“Bring him to me…”

“…alive.”

Part 21 The command center was completely silent. Rows of enormous digital displays illuminated the darkness. On the largest screen… Luke Mercer walked across the parking lot outside the engineering firm where he had worked for nearly nine years. He carried a travel mug in one hand. His laptop bag rested over his shoulder………….
