His hands trembled around his cane. “No…” he whispered. “It can’t be.” William stared toward the stone platform that had lifted him from beneath the archive. “The Vault…” His breathing became uneven. “Someone opened it.” Michael looked at Arthur. “I thought only the Founder Key could unlock it.” Arthur nodded. “It should.” “It was designed that way.” Samuel Brooks frowned. “Then how is this possible?” Arthur looked as though he had just solved a nightmare. “There was…” he whispered. “…a second key.” Silence. Richard Hale smiled. “I was wondering how long it would take you.” Michael’s eyes narrowed. “You knew.” Richard laughed quietly. “Of course I knew.” “The Council never trusted a single key.” Arthur looked sick. “Who has it?” Richard slowly looked toward the ceiling. Then smiled. “I do not.” Another pause.
“But someone much younger does.” … The alarm suddenly stopped. The silence afterward felt even worse. Then… a loud metallic thud echoed from somewhere below. Boom. Boom. Boom. Something massive… was climbing upward. Not an elevator. Footsteps. Heavy. Slow. Each one powerful enough to shake dust from the ceiling. Chloe tightened her grip on my hand. “Mom…” “I don’t like this.” Neither did I. … Samuel Brooks immediately signaled his team. “Defensive positions!” The Ravens spread throughout the archive with flawless precision. Some aimed toward the hidden passage. Others covered the library entrance. Michael pulled William behind one of the stone pillars. “You’ve just been freed.” “I’m not letting you die today.” William smiled faintly. “You sound exactly like Sarah.” Michael looked away. “I miss her every day.” “So do I.” Neither man had another chance to speak.
The footsteps grew louder. Closer. Closer. Until finally… they stopped. Directly beneath us. … A deep grinding sound echoed through the floor. The circular platform began to rise again. Slowly. Everyone raised their weapons. Even Arthur. Even Richard. Nobody knew who was coming. The platform reached halfway. Then… a pair of polished black shoes appeared. Expensive. Immaculately clean. Next… tailored black trousers. A dark overcoat. Leather gloves. Finally… the man’s face emerged. He looked no older than forty. Dark hair. Clean-shaven. Calm gray eyes. He looked more like a university professor than someone emerging from an ancient underground prison. He glanced around the room. As if mildly surprised to find so many people waiting. Then… he smiled. “Arthur.” His voice was warm. “It’s been a long time.” Arthur staggered backward. His cane slipped from his hand. “No…” he whispered.
“I watched you die.” The man chuckled. “So did everyone else.” Richard Hale’s confidence disappeared completely. His lips parted. “You…” For the first time… Richard Hale looked afraid. Real fear. The newcomer slowly removed his gloves. “My name…” he said quietly, “…is Jonathan Mercer.” The room remained silent. No one recognized the name. Except three people. Arthur. William. Richard. All three had gone deathly pale. … Michael stepped forward. “Who is he?” Arthur couldn’t answer. William finally spoke. His voice barely audible. “He built the Circle.” I frowned. “I thought the Circle was centuries old.” Jonathan smiled. “The idea was.” “I merely perfected it.” Richard lowered his head. Almost respectfully. “Founder…” Jonathan looked disappointed. “I told you never to call me that.” My blood ran cold. Founder? Richard Hale… the man everyone feared…
was treating this stranger like a superior.
…
Jonathan calmly surveyed the room.
His eyes settled on Chloe.
He smiled gently.
“So…”
“You’re Natalie.”
He looked at me.
“You have Sarah’s smile.”
I instinctively stepped back.
“You knew my mother?”
“I loved your mother.”
The room fell silent.
William’s head snapped upward.
“What?”
Jonathan sighed.
“Not the way you’re thinking.”
He smiled sadly.
“Sarah was like the daughter I never had.”
William clenched his fists.
“You manipulated her.”
“I protected her.”
“You destroyed her life!”
Jonathan’s expression hardened.
“I tried to save it.”
…
Vanessa stepped forward.
“My daughter Emma died because of all of you.”
Jonathan slowly turned toward her.
“No.”
Vanessa shouted,
“Don’t you dare lie to me!”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“When Emma died…”
“My own son died with her.”
Silence.
“What?”
Jonathan looked at the floor.
“They were married.”
Every person in the room stared at him.
Vanessa’s face emptied of color.
“No…”
Jonathan nodded.
“They kept it secret.”
“They were afraid the Council would never approve.”
My mind raced.
Emma…
had been married?
To Jonathan’s son?
William whispered,
“David…”
Jonathan nodded once.
“My only child.”
“He and Emma were trying to escape.”
Richard suddenly looked away.
Michael noticed.
He grabbed Richard by the collar.
“You knew?”
Richard said nothing.
Michael shoved him harder.
“ANSWER ME!”
Richard finally whispered,
“I warned them.”
Jonathan nodded.
“He did.”
The room froze.
Richard Hale…
had tried to save them?
Nothing made sense anymore.
…
Before anyone could speak again…
one of the Ravens rushed into the archive.
“Commander!”
Samuel turned.
“What is it?”
The Raven’s face was pale.
“We’ve searched the lower tunnels.”
“And?”
“We found twelve chambers.”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“The Council rooms.”
The Raven swallowed.
“They’re all empty.”
Jonathan quietly smiled.
“Of course they are.”
Michael frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Jonathan looked toward the ceiling.
“The Council never meets underground anymore.”
He walked calmly toward one of the mansion windows.
Pulled the curtain aside.
Outside…
beyond the estate gates…
dozens of headlights suddenly appeared.
Then hundreds.
Luxury sedans.
Black SUVs.
Armored vehicles.
They rolled silently onto the property from every direction.
Not an army.
A procession.
Jonathan spoke without taking his eyes off them.
“They accepted my invitation.”
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
“No…”
Jonathan smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked back at all of us.
“You’ve spent thirty years searching for the Circle.”
A long pause.
“So I decided…”
“…to bring the entire Circle to you.”
Outside…
the first limousine stopped in front of Carter Manor.
Its rear door slowly opened.
A polished shoe stepped onto the gravel.
Then another limousine.
Then another.
One after another…
the remaining members of the Council had arrived.
